September KSU SBDC Event to Explore Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition
September 23, 2016
According to the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Kennesaw State University, "there is this romantic notion that entrepreneurship is all about
starting a business from scratch, on a shoe string budget, and building it into a fantastic success." However, this is not the only path to entrepreneurship.
A rapidly growing trend is entrepreneurship through acquiring someone else's company. There are many good reasons:
- Accessing financing for a start-up is extremely difficult. However, buying an existing business with a history of sales and profits is attractive to
lenders or investors.
- The owner's cash contribution required by banks to acquire a business can come from a seller's note; hence, a smaller cash investment.
- The transition by 50 somethings from corporate work to self-employment as a career choice.
- Lower risk involved in buying an existing business than starting one from scratch (very attractive especially to those 50 somethings!).
In September, the KSU SBDC welcomes Phil Verstraete as their "Spotlight Entrepreneur" for their monthly Wise and Shine
event. Phil is one of those 50 somethings who transitioned from corporate work to entrepreneurship when he acquired a single store fitness equipment
business. Phil will be sharing some of the problems and opportunities he and his partners faced and the decisions they made. We will learn what they got
right and what they got wrong. Admission is free, but registration is recommended.
