Successful Franchisees Leverage Skills and Savvy

Ashish Gupta has a superb resume, which includes an MBA from Emory University, top leadership positions with multinational companies, Lean Six Sigma and
the bullet points go on. So, what happened when his position was eliminated and his career path turned off course?
The corporate refugee story is all too familiar. In fact, I speak with first-hand experience.
Ashish spent a few years jumping around to different positions, eventually deciding he’d had enough. He took control, moved his family back to Atlanta
and began looking at business opportunities while leveraging his contacts to take on small consulting projects.
For Ashish, finding the perfect business boiled down to the answers to two questions.
- What kind of business could be started that would utilize his project management, operations analysis, manufacturing, mergers and acquisitions and
business development skills?
- How could he mitigate the risk he associated with owning his own business?
Right about that time, Ashish and I met at a local networking event and I invited him to a small business-networking group so he could promote his consulting
business. As we got to know each other he told me had explored franchising opportunities but would prefer to find a business that was already up and running.
Ashish agreed to complete our Personal Franchise Assessment
we met to build a business model that would leverage his diverse skill set and investment level.
I suggested he investigate a franchise resale opportunity
that had come to my attention. There are some real advantages to acquiring an up and running operation
Instant cash flow, trained employees and a proven track record were immediately compelling reasons for Ashish. Best of all, the transparency inherent in
franchising appealed to his desire to avoid riskier ventures.
The business appeared to be a fit and Ashish embraced the necessary research with what he called “a high level of scrutiny”, applying many of the skills
he’d acquired in his corporate role. “I had a great deal of experience with mergers and acquisitions, so I understood how to evaluate the financials, review
the legal aspects and I compared years of performance data across multiple franchises in the Atlanta area.”
He also knew there were intangibles not necessarily on the P&L statement. “I pretended to be a customer and visited one of the franchise locations
I was interested in buying to evaluate their service”, he mentioned. “It was top-notch!”
“I knew I was on to something when the more I learned about it, the more interested I became.” Learning about the business, identifying opportunities
for improvement and peeling back the layers was second nature to Ashish. Of course, it helped tremendously that the location he was interested in buying
was in Decatur, close to his alma mater and in the community he loves.
He now owns two Cartridge World locations, has brought his wife on to help in the business and is looking forward to continued growth and success. When
asked what one skill he utilizes most in his role as a successful franchise owner, he responded, “Sales. I greatly underestimated the amount of sales,
but it’s one of the more important parts of my job.”
Ashish Gupta is a working success story and an example of a corporate refugee who cracked the code. He found the right franchise fit by not only leveraging
his skills during the due diligence stage, but as he took over to grow the business as well; skills such as:
- Team Leadership
- Sales and Marketing
- Problem Solving
- Client Services
