17 years ago this Thanksgiving, I recall retiring to my back porch for a cigarette to top off my Thanksgiving gluttony. 10 years of smoking was already starting to take a noticeable toll on my health and I found myself thinking “I feel terrible and can’t wait to quit on New Year’s Day.” That was it; the stupidity of waiting another minute hit me full force. I quit smoking that Thanksgiving – cold turkey – and I am thankful every day that I was able to take control of my health.
The desire to feel in control is a basic human truth, something that everyone shares to some degree. We all want to feel like our hands hold the wheels that steer the course of our lives. And, when something knocks us off course, whether it’s a bad habit or a corporate layoff, it is the feeling of being out of control that throws us.
This year, I am thankful to be a non-smoker, and I’m thankful for a career that allows me to control my destiny. Thank you for supporting me in both. And, whether your turkey is served cold or hot this year, happy Thanksgiving!
